Viaduct drone shot - Dry years

Be a H2O Hero: Celebrate small actions that save water, every day.

Regional NSW is historically vulnerable to drought and variable rainfall.

As part of the Regional Drought Resilience Plan, Council is prioritising proactive education to build long-term water awareness and resilience.

This campaign is designed to engage residents - especially newcomers to our region - in adopting positive water practices before drought restrictions may need to be introduced. By promoting smart, sustainable behaviours now, Council can strengthen the community's preparedness and reduce the future burden on water systems and emergency water services.

Small actions. Big impact. Every drop counts.

Goulburn Mulwaree is a community built on resilience. Living here has always meant working with the challenges of dry seasons and unpredictable weather.

By being smart with water today — even when our dams are healthy — we can make sure our community is ready for tomorrow. Water-wise habits protect our environment, reduce costs, and help keep our region thriving in all seasons.

That’s what H2O Heroes is all about: making water-wise living easy, practical, and something we can all be proud of.

Every resident can be a hero in their own way, simply by making everyday choices that protect our precious water resources.

What is H2O Heroes?

H2O Heroes is a Council-led initiative to encourage all residents to make water-smart decisions today that make a difference to our community’s continued ability to thrive in the future.

This campaign is part of the Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Wingecaribee Shire Council Regional Drought Resilience Plan that was funded as a joint initiative by the Australian and NSW Governments, under Round Two of the Future Drought Fund’s Drought Resilience Planning Program. It focuses on building a culture of smart water use across all seasons and weather conditions to build our region’s ability to manage and cope with drought.

Whether you’re new to the area or a long-term local, you can be a H2O Hero and do your part to help keep our community water-smart, prepared and proud.

Be a H2O Hero – Everyday Water-Saving Tips

Small changes, big results.

Saving water doesn’t have to be difficult, complicated or expensive — and it’s more effective when we all pitch in. Here are some easy actions you can start doing today to save water for tomorrow.

Kitchen

  • Only run the dishwasher when it’s full — saves water and energy.
  • Rinse vegetables in a bowl instead of under a running tap — then you can reuse the water on your plants.
  • Fix leaking taps quickly - one drip a second wastes more than 1,000L of water each month (which could fill your bath nine times).

Bathroom & Laundry

  • Keep showers short — aim for 4 minutes or less.
  • Use a water-efficient shower head – they can save 10-15L per minute compared to inefficient shower heads.
  • Turn off the tap when brushing teeth or shaving — even these small amounts add up.
  • Wait for a full load in your washing machine or adjust the water level to suit the size of your load — maximises every drop.
  • Use a water-efficient dual-flush toilet – replacing a single-flush toilet could save over 60,000L of water each year.
  • Fix leaks quickly — one drip per second can waste thousands of litres a year.

Looking to replace your washing machine, dishwasher or toilet? Renovating your bathroom or kitchen? This is a great opportunity to be a H2O Hero!

Garden & Outdoors

Around 40% of a typical households water is used in the garden and outdoors. Being water-wise outside can make a big difference to water conservation and reduce your water bill.

  • Water early or late in the day — this reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation during hotter parts of the day so you can water less often.
  • Reuse water where you can - use rainwater or greywater outside so you can save drinking water for inside the house.
  • Water smart - giving your plants and lawn less frequent but deeper soaking encourages deeper root growth and builds drought tolerance.
  • Wash your car or dog on the grass – water your lawn instead of the concrete.
  • Use a broom or mop and bucket on hard surfaces – don’t use a hose to clean your paths, driveway, fences or outside walls.

Rainwater Tanks (Rural properties not on town water)

  • Clean gutters and downpipes – remove leaves and debris that can clog downpipes and reduce the amount of water flowing into your tank when it rains.
  • Check for leaks – regularly inspect the tank, pipes and pumps.
  • Know your water usage needs and monitor water levels – adjusting your water usage during times of lower rainfall will help avoid the expense of carting in town water.
  • Use greywater from your washing machine in the garden – conserve your tank water for drinking, washing and cooking.

Together, we can all be H2O Heroes.

Every drop saved helps protect our future. Whether it’s shortening your shower, fixing a leak, or reusing water in the garden, your everyday choices add up to something powerful.
